Thread Faction ss2016 Tour

Hello Friends! I'm thrilled to be participating in a blog tour for Thread Faction* today. Liz Elliot is the designer behind the children's pattern company Thread Faction, and she's just released her spring/summer line. It's a fabulous looking collection of patterns using knits- perfect for easy summer wear!

There are links for the other stops on the blog tour at the bottom of this post, as well as details on the GIVEAWAYS so make sure you check that out!

hello holli thread faction tour1

I've sewn up #106- a girls skater skort perfect for my gals who love skirts but still need a little more coverage for play. After I decided on a pattern I took to my Kidcouture Pinterest board to get some inspiration, and came across this image that I pinned a year ago. I love how the stripes seem to curve due to the shape of the skirt and I love the simple drawstring detail.

Screen Shot 2016-05-26 at 2.48.09 PM

#106 is the perfect shape for this, and stripes will get lots of wear since they're basically a neutral, right? I bought some double knit from Joann Fabrics (the same fun stripe/polka dot I used for this dress a couple years ago) and some white jersey to try to form some sort of drawstring out of. I ditched the drawstring idea because I was sewing against the clock, and by pure coincidence Liz posted this video tutorial for the knit fabric twine just yesterday so I took it as a sign and added it! I love the little something extra it adds and I love that Liz and I were on the same wavelength!

hello holli thread faction tour7

The shorts underneath mean they can run, skip, dig, jump, and climb without showing their unders. Caroline just recently toilet trained and not having to layer up separate shorts under a skirt will help prevent those wardrobe related accidents that seem to happen in the early days after ditching diapers.

The only changes I made to the pattern were to lengthen both skirts according to the pattern instructions for my tall skinny girls, and adding the twine detail on the front.

I hadn't sewn any of her patterns before, and I'm happy to report that I fully enjoyed my sewing experience with this pattern! There were lots of great tips included on things like fabric selection and tips for sewing with knits, and an included crib sheet for those who don't need the full instructions. The diagrams well drawn, clear, and easy to understand. This pattern had lots of extras but was still simple and straightforward without too much extra fluff. I love the waistband construction method and am really happy with how quickly these came together without sparing any quality. I'm already planning to purchase more and can definitely see myself sewing this pattern again! It could easily be hacked as separate skirt and shorts, too! You can find it and all the other patterns from the collection over on the Thread Faction* site.

Liz has an awesome giveaway going on over on her blog- head over to this post to enter to win an amazing prize package of fabric and patterns!

But wait! You can also enter here to win a pattern of your choice from the SS2016 Collection below!

Hello my friends! The Holiday Debut Blog Tour continues, and the inspiring looks just keep coming! The thing I love about these sorts of tours is the variety you get- I mean, just look at all the amazing things that have been done with 3 patterns! The creativity of these bloggers is outstanding, and I feel so grateful to have such talented people willing to participate! The first stop today is Candice on her blog Candice Ayala. Her version with a lace trimmed Blue Ridge Dress is KILLING ME. So much cute. https://www.dropbox.com/s/vxs9mh8trriytka/12363245_10208048536199271_2675290488809819833_o.jpg?dl=0

A little about me...

I've been sewing for 20 of my 28 years on this earth. My mom enrolled me in a neighborhood sewing class after I started using her fabric scraps to fashion clothes for my Barbies. My love for sewing has always been a part of my life, but when I was pregnant with my first daughter 5 years ago my love became more of an addiction. I've been sewing non stop these past 5 years, mostly things for my children. I love to refashion and upcycle and I learned a lot about construction and fit by trial and error, taking things apart stitch by stitch and reimagining them as something else or altering the fit to suit my needs. In early 2015 my birthday came around and I asked for peace and quiet, haha!  My husband was set to book a hotel for me for a night, but then I quickly changed my mind and asked to be enrolled in Lauren Dahl's Pattern Workshop course instead. I haven't regretted that for a second. I spent the first part of the year pouring over drafting books and learning the ins and outs of illustrator and digital drafting, and in June I released my first pattern, the Blue Ridge Dress. I'm delighted to be on this pattern making journey and I have more in store!

Along with some amazing inspiration coming your way, we've got an awesome giveaway lined up thanks to the support of many fellow designers and fabric shops. The online sewing community is full of the best kind of people, and this is proof- Over $300 worth of prizes being offered to one lucky winner, all generously donated by our sponsors to help make this blog tour a success. Make sure you check out the posts throughout the tour to enter the giveaway via rafflecopter. The winner will be chosen at random and announced at the end of the tour.

Handmade Halloween: Gone Batty

Charly is obsessed with Bats. For about a year she had imaginary bats that all had names according to what they ate... Flower, Sugar, Poo Poo... yes, that one ate from the toilet. She knows what nocturnal means and how bats communicate and that some bat species in the US are endangered due to white nose syndrome. She also loves princesses and all things girly, but since we've done princess costumes for a few years in a row I started planting the seed early on to be a bat for Halloween. And somehow, it stuck! I even bought this awesome Cat Eared Hat (which of course we use as a Bat Eared Hat) from Glitter + Wit a couple months back to seal the deal. [embed]https://www.dropbox.com/s/7e2glrcb3tkuvd5/bat%20costume10.png?dl=0[/embed]

[embed]https://www.dropbox.com/s/biu3ti364h4y2a1/bat%20costume12.png?dl=0[/embed]

I used the Bimaa Sweater Pattern from LouBee Clothing (a fave of mine) with the shawl neck option for the top and the Best Harem Pants from Too Sweets for the bottoms. Harem pants were a good fit since bats have that sort of apron of skin between their little legs. I originally planned to use the Alley Cat Romper from Lil Luxe and attach the wings from the wrist to ankle to make a more realistic bat wing, but I opted for separates so we'd have something wearable after Halloween. Charly already made her strong opinion on rompers known:)

[embed]https://www.dropbox.com/s/mudz7sp9f3qur5b/bat%20costume6.png?dl=0[/embed]

[embed]https://www.dropbox.com/s/2zrroaws1bu3jnj/bat%20costume9.png?dl=0[/embed]

[embed]https://www.dropbox.com/s/872d24fwf9nnnyy/bat%20costume4.png?dl=0[/embed]

The wings are self drafted and are sewn with a stretch vegan leather from Joann. I sewed simple straps to slide her arms through and left the bottom loose. I didn't even finish the edges on any of it- it was a super lazy sewist project.

[embed]https://www.dropbox.com/s/w7dzjvvi76939rs/bat%20costume5.jpg?dl=0[/embed]

I was happy to have a much simpler costume to sew than last year's Anna and Olaf costumes. All that applique just about did me in. Caroline is wearing an old Rapunzel costume this year so I'm off the hook for making a second, but I'm thinking next year I won't get off so easy!
